Budget Debate?

In Singapore, the debate on the Budget appears to be an end itself. This is rather strange since the only case I can cite in which this would makes sense is a debate competition; and I suppose in a setting as "sacred" as the parliament, I would expect that things are done with greater purpose. Yet, what we see is that there is absolutely no sense or purpose to the so-called Budget Debate in Singapore.

MPs raised some concerns on the Budget (after heaping plenty of praise of course) and then the Ministry of Finance just said something along the line of "this the best budget we can have, thank you for your feedback and by the way, even the 18 yr old in RJC think this is absolutely fantastic (so I wonder why sensible adults like you don't see the point - duh)".

And of course even if the MPs think this is the most idiotic budget in the world and that if they are to swear by their ancestors' grave they would not hesitate to trash it, they would still have to vote for it because of the party whip (or is voting even needed for the Budget too since it does not require any amendment of the statute?) But whichever the case, the debate is pointless. We might as well call it the "Budget Clarifications".
